When was the last time you spent 15 minutes watching the clouds? Remember the game of naming the shapes and the delight of watching them transform into something new? Perhaps, you had a vacation this summer and gave yourself the time to rejuvenate, recharge and reconnect with the creative wonderment that children are so comfortable with. Or perhaps, your focus and time have been only to business needs. Imagine you are able to shape those clouds into vehicles for your success. What do you see? Watch how the shapes transform effortlessly into another reality. Does your business flow when atmospheric changes occur? Give yourself 15 minutes of silence to lie on your back and watch the unfolding of life and listen to your intuitive self about what’s next for your business.

OUTSIDE THE BOX THINKING REQUIRES RISK. You’ve probably seen the 9 dots game, where you must connect the 9 dots with 4 straight lines, without lifting your pencil. Do you remember how to do it? Try it now:

If you stay inside the confines of the 9 dots, you cannot solve the puzzle. You must be willing to let go of the tried & true and experiment. Staying within the confines of our past successes can, likewise, limit the possibilities of the future.

COACHES ACTION TIP> Choose 1 area of your business strategy this month and spend an hour, working "on your business". For instance, focus on your listing inventory. What are the sources of your listings? How can you double the number you are carrying on a regular basis? What new activities would you need to implement? New systems? How can you leverage what you love about this part of the business and get to do what you do well even more often? Then, next month, choose a different area and repeat the exercise..

EFFECTIVE VS EFFICIENT

We do not get paid to be busy. Earnest Hemingway reminds us, "Do not confuse movement with action". In Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s book, FLOW: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, he describes being in the flow when "perception and understanding come to a stop and spirit moves where it wants." You’ve had those experiences of being in the flow when an effortlessness and enjoyment characterize your actions. Moments like these are increased when we are focused with our intention and fully connected to our inner motivation.

COACHES ACTION TIP> Quiet the outer noise to hear the inner voice. Take 15 minutes EVERY day and sit quietly and do nothing. If you wish, close your eyes and meditate or just sit in silence and listen to your breathing. As thoughts come up, let them go and return to just being in the silence. You’ll begin to feel more peacefulness and ability to connect with your heart’s desires. ( I do realize you may have to sit in the stall in the bathroom or get in your car and stop somewhere to do this! AND make sure to turn the phone & pager OFF)

3. LIFELONG LEARNING The information explosion has changed everything in our business: new expectations from consumers, new technologies for marketing and doing business more effectively, new ways of structuring our compensation., new ways of learning and connecting with others. Are you taking advantage of the changes in every way you could to benefit your business? (A great example of this is email classes—don’t miss the announcement in resources further down)

COACHES ACTION TIP> . Over the next 90 days, what NEW ideas will you expose yourself to. At least once per week, read, listen to a tape or attend a seminar. Learn from other industries. A combination of reading the Wall Street Journal and FAST COMPANY magazine for a month, with give you two very different views of business reality

An Invitation To Submit A Story (This is for the women)

My story about an incident with my mother was recently published in Kay Allenbaugh's book, Chocolate For A Woman's Heart. This (and reading The Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood) has prompted me to collect stories for a book celebrating those defining moments when our mothers said or did something that indelibly shaped us and our future.

The stories I am looking for, as remembered by a daughter, will give the reader the powerful experience of this connection, and the love, compassion and gratitude for the sacrifices, opportunities and actions of our mothers. They will be short (1-3 pages, double-spaced, 1000 words maximum), heartwarming, funny, sweet, endearing and inspirational stories filled with vivid images, that will encourage readers to see themselves or remember special times that have faded some over the years. Each should have a positive, inspiring ending that leaves the reader with goosebumps, an "ah-ha" insight or even a tear.

If you have a story and would like to be considered for inclusion, send your submission by November 15th, 1998. You retain all rights for your story and will be fully credited for it.

Although it is no secret that email is an important way of being connected these days, it is surprising to me how many agents are not responding quickly or even checking their mail on a regular basis. It is like running an ad in the Sunday paper and then going out of town for 10 days with no one answering the phone!

The clients that respond by email expect FAST responses. Checking your email morning and evening is the minimum acceptable responses time.

Email is one of the most exciting opportunities to come along in a very long time. You have the opportunity to markedly reduce your advertising costs and maximize your contact. Less than 10% of agents are using this application and they are creating a huge gap between themselves and their competitors.
