Inventing 1998
"The man who starts out going nowhere, usually gets
there" Dale Carnagie. Annual strategic planning can create an exciting future that
wasnt likely to happen anyway. In his book, E-Myth Revisited, Michael Gerber exhorts
us to work on our businesses rather than just in them. Investing 1/365th
of this year in inventing next year is one of the most productive
activities you could do this month. No procrastinating. Right now, get out your calendar
and block out a whole day! Ready

1. The easiest plan to execute is one that is congruent
with your values and in alignment with your vision. That way you are just expressing your
authentic self and being the very best you can be. Its a mistake to plan production
before you clarify this. We change and the world changes, so annual review of this is
necessary. It is not static. As you and your business evolve each year, you will raise the
bar for yourself and what motivates you.
Coaches Action Tip> Write down the 5 values that are most important to you. The first 3
will come easy, patiently dig a little for the rest. Is your vision (or purpose) for your
business simple and aligned with these values? Perfect it until it fits.
2. To truly invent 1998, begin at the end. In a perfect
world, visualize how it would look on Dec. 31st,1998, if you had that magic wand? If it
isnt something that takes your breath away thinking about, its not big enough.
Inspire yourself with a dream big enough to force you to think outside of your comfort
zone. Dont limit yourself by focusing on the obstacles. Your dream is possible.
Napolean Hill said "That which you can conceive, you can achieve."
Coaches Action Tip> First, list what resources your need or where you will need to do
operate differently to support your dream. For instance, if you intend to double your
production, you may need to hire an assistant, buy some new technology or increase your
marketing budget. Then, spend at least an hour strategically brainstorming. Some questions
to ask: What new services or ways of delivering better services are important to my
clients? What new niches am I excited about? What am I known for(your biggest strength)?
How can I give more of that? Who should I be spending more time with/marketing to/getting
in front of? What project could I do this year that will express 2 or more of my values
and provide value to my clients? Get outrageous as you do this-you dont have to
commit to taking action on each idea.
3. You can't get where you are going, if you don't know
where you are. Pull out all the information about 1997 that relates to your business.
After reviewing where you are, you can create your strategic plan for 1998.
Coaches Action Tip> First, list as many points of measure as you can to identify where
your business came from and how your money was spent. Where did your buyers and sellers
come from? Advertising? Referrals/Personal Contacts? What did it cost you to generate a
lead? What was your closing ratio on listing appointments? Next, clearly identify the
components necessary to realize this dream. List the areas you will track, such as Total
Production, Number of Units, Size of client base, Number of Referrals, Days & Time
Off.
4. Action translates dreams into reality. Systems and
habits are the keys to the door that unlocks results.
Coaches Action Tip> Clarity of purpose allows you to easily prioritize & execute:
What monthly, weekly, daily actions will you have to take to reach this dream? Time block
1998 one month at a time for the whole year. Make the time for whats IMPORTANT by
scheduling it! "First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to
do." - Epictetus
