Soar With Your Strengths

"Life is too short to perfect your weaknesses" Joeann Fossland

As we strive to grow, improve and learn, we often concentrate on what we dislike doing. Conventional training and learning has convinced us that if we find where we are weak and work diligently to improve, we will do better. While this is probably so, it isn’t the best and highest use of your time and energy. Stop struggling! Using your strengths is more fun!

You possess unique abilities and gifts that come naturally to you. Expressing and using these aptitudes is easy for you and is natural. Think about what you love to do most in your job: Is it the people contact? The problem-solving and challenges involved meeting their needs? For most salespeople, these are our forte! How can you do that more of the time?

Coaches Action Tip> Focusing on your strengths requires little struggle, and gives big payoffs. Each week this month, choose one activity you love doing and make that the theme for the week! Perhaps, "Building Relationships" !

Then spend 1 hour a day taking action directly related to this: Call past clients, take some to lunch, plan a client appreciation event ! Express yourself and HAVE FUN!

You have a huge untapped network around you with the business people and stores you frequent or know. They are building their businesses too! Be innovative: partner for a mailing, hold public seminars together, create a special open house event! Consistently adding to your network will build your business naturally. When you create business for others, they will more likely refer business to you.

Consciously seeking opportunities for others, powerfully reminds them that YOU are a professional who takes your business seriously. This "top of the mind" contact is some of the most potent ( and least expensive) marketing you can do. Who do you already know? Who do you need to meet?

Coaches Action Tip> Create your Magic Team List. Identify your team of 100 other professionals. A synergy is produced resulting in referrals, access to problem solving and high-expertise. Start by writing down 5-8 broad categories such as home services, money & legal, personal services, small businesses. The obvious place to start is with industry related partners. Next, identify all those other service industries that are interested in the same demographic market as you: interior decorators, landscapers, financial planners. Most of us will stop here with 10-15. This exercise will really start to pay off for you if you will keep building for 100 person networking list.. Start this month with the first 20. Then add 8-10 per month until you get to 100. ( "Team 100" provides a generic list of categories developed by Coach University, if you’d like a copy, email me).

STOP doing what you don’t do well! Most of us are lone rangers and often we are perfectionists, as well. Learn to love to delegate. If learning about computer software programs is not your thing, hire someone to set it up and show you just what you need to know. If paperwork and detail are a struggle, find someone with those skills to assist you. If . Let go of perfecting those weaknesses.

Coaches Action Tip> This week, identify where you are tolerating something that is incomplete because you don’t do it well. Hire someone to take care of it! Completion creates energy & space! You’ll feel more freed up to have that off your plate! If you are stopped in this area because of your budget, begin small and the time you free up, if you use it productively will allow you to increase the delegation. Start, perhaps, with someone to spend 10 hours per week on tasks you find hard or unpleasant. You spend that 10 hours prospecting/listing/with buyers/or negotiating. You will create more business and your budget will take care of itself.

"Success is not the key to happiness; happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you are successful." -Herman Cain

Additional food for thought

In the book, "Zen Without Zen Masters," there is a story about a young man who sought out a Zen master because of his dissatisfaction with his life. He said that he had consulted one expert after another without success: "One person told me to give up sex and I did, but I still suffered. Another told me to give up meat and I did, but I still suffered. Another told me to give up sweets and I did, but I still suffered. I have tried everything that has been suggested, without success. You are my only hope. Please help me."

The Zen master replied, "Give up suffering."
