Joeann's Musings:  Being Happy or Right?

In honor of my husband’s 60th birthday, we took a 5000+ mile road trip for two weeks around the Northwest part of the country.

We began in California with the Sequoia Forests, Yosemite National Park and then over to Highway 101 through the Redwoods and  continued through Oregon, enjoying the trees, rivers and berries. The Women’s  Council of REALTORS® Portland Meeting, combining Regions IV and Region VIII, was filled with education, fun and networking. After the meetings, we spent the next week traveling through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado and New Mexico. Wow! What a gorgeous country we have. There is still plenty of space to sell!!!  If you want to see all the pictures, here’s the link.

 

IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: If you’ve never been to a WCR Regional meeting, you are really missing out. These meetings are small enough to really enable you to connect and I know the participants feel they gained in many ways that will increase their business and effectiveness. Actually, I believe that you will be a better agent by going to ANY state or national meetings. If you haven’t made plans to go to the NAR Convention in Orlando, consider that as a way to enhance your skills and knowledge!

 

But, back to what I wanted to share….5000 miles is a LONG time to be in a car with someone, even if you love them lots! A couple of times, my husband wanted to take routes (like an extra 11 hours across Wyoming) that weren’t in MY plans!  I found I needed to remember the lesson that has kept me married to this man for almost 25 years…..it’s more important to be happy than right! So I found myself biting my tongue, realizing that I didn’t need to “win” this battle and, after all, this was his birthday trip!

 

One of the nicest things another person can hear is: “You are right”. I am practicing saying that a lot these days and I am having more joy!  It’s taken me 50+ years to realize that being right doesn’t always bring happiness, but letting others be right (or at least letting them know you can concede there MIGHT be another perspective from which the situation could be approached) always has a better outcome. Is there a battle you’d be better off conceding? Is there someone, who, if you started saying, “You are right” might transform from someone trying desperately to make their point to a reasonable someone because they have been heard? Remember…everyone is doing the best they can with what they see!

Joeann's Musings:  Nothing To Lose

My husband, Bub, beat me at tennis this morning. Actually, there is nothing unusual about this, but it did get me thinking. When we play, we have different motivators for playing. He is playing to hit those perfect serves, exert his power and win and I am playing to get exercise and have fun with my husband. Luckily with different goals, we can both win. Just in case you were wondering, I do have to admit I am a bit (ha! that's an understatement) competitive and I do LOVE to win, but it sours his mood so...it takes all the fun out of it. I do come out the victor a couple times a year and that is good enough for me. And, I can tease him the rest of the time and tell him I am just letting him win!

Today, though, I noticed something that happens when we play. He hits his first serve with all he has and then if he misses, plays it more carefully with the second serve. This seems to be the accepted way to play. He often will win with an ace on the first serve but wins the second serves only about half the time.

On the other hand, when I am serving, I hit both my serves with all I've got, because I am going to lose the match anyway, so why should I play it safe? Why shouldn't I use that 2nd serve to stretch and try to hit the hardest and best I can anyway? This makes for some fun points which I'll often win, putting my partner a bit off balance since he expects a soft second serve :>)

My Mom always encouraged me to take risks and I can still hear her saying, "What have you got to lose?"
In my tennis game with Bub I have everything to gain and nothing to lose, so I can risk and just have fun playing my very best with no holding back.

I recently co-lead The FSBO Real Estate Game (next one starts July 12th). We had 10 really motivated agents playing the Game and I noticed the ones with the most points were willing to risk and go for it at the 100% level, instead of playing it safe. They took some of the serious out of trying to score a listing with each and every contact and changed the focus to increasing their contact, not knowing which they'd click with and which not. Not surprisingly,they were the ones that got the most listings.

One side benefit to this approach is that you get to have fun, regardless of the outcome and isn't that what each day should have in it anyway :>)
