Joeann's Musings: Opportunities vs. Distractions
 
 
A Coach often uses distinctions to expand client's perspective to enable them to think in new ways. Language is a powerful tool that human's have in their kit that other species lack that enables us to reframe the way we see things and make better choices from the enlarged perspective.
 
The distinction between OPPORTUNITIES & DISTRACTIONS has been a very powerful one for me.
I never wanted to miss an opportunity and often found myself trying to juggle too many things, not bringing the level of excellence I'd like to any of them. I also would miss the chance to "go deep" with the opportunities that would have been great ones for me because my energies were spread across so many projects. The Jack(or Jane) of All Trades but Master of None Syndrome!
 
As I have helped clients design their plans for an Awesome 2003, I find many are struggling with this same issue when deciding what goals and roles to include for this year. You, too, may be holding on to "old" obligations or commitments that have already given you their fruit. By resigning from  a committee or from a leads group where you are comfortable and competent, but where you aren't growing, you enable someone else to take your spot and learn and contribute. You know it is time to move on or say no when you notice your heart doesn't SING at the thought of THAT involvement.
 
The same principle is useful with many other areas, such as marketing choices, client needs and requests for help from others. Ask yourself, does it fit with YOUR big picture this year? Does it excite you or fulfill you? Or does it stress you ?
 
Then choose only the items and commitments that are true opportunities for your life for this year. By choosing carefully with conscious thought, you be able to focus your attention. Know the distractions will take energy and dissipate your results. And, if there is an opportunity you pass by now, it will probably be available or surface again in the future.
Less is often more!

Advantage Thinking: Joeann's Rule of 3

 

 

This year, I ask you to choose only 3!


Three big goals for the year.

Three areas each month that will take you closer to those 3 goals.

Three areas of focus each week that are the important/non-urgent areas.

And then each day: Which Three things TODAY would make the most difference?

You will find power by simplifying to 3. You can then focus as a laser with an intensity that was not available when you were focusing on 20+ items.

Advantage Thinking: What differentiates you?

What do you do better than anyone else?
 
 I believe "Life is too short to perfect your weaknesses." By identifying the gift or gifts that you are blessed with and offering that to those who will benefit most, you will naturally excel.
Our own strengths are often transparent to us, because they are so easy for us. We assume everyone can easily do what comes easy to us.
 
A good way to get more insight into what your true gifts and strengths are is by asking others. Choose at least 10 people and just ask them what they see as your dominant strength. A pattern will most likely arise. Use the information you gain by thinking about how that gift or strength can be better utilized or expressed.
 
For instance, if you hear repeatedly that people feel you are a very empathetic listener, consider which niches in the market really need that. People moving because of stressful situations such as divorce or death may be areas where this is needed....
Whatever YOUR strength is, you can brainstorm some about who is the buyer or seller that needs that quality. Another way to approach it, is by making a list of the traits of your "ideal client".
Think of the type people you really enjoy working with and what it was about those transactions that made it easy or fulfilling. Most likely there is a fit to that transparent strength with these people.
 
When you clarify what's different about you, you give yourself the reason why someone should pick you!  A great resource for this thinking is a book by Dr. Lynda Falkenstein called Nichecraft. It guides you through 9 steps to building a business reflective of your strong suit!

Joeann's Musings: Surprises vs. Problems
 
 
Do unexpected events throw your day into crisis and upset? Or do you gracefully go with the flow?

A 114 year old man when asked the secret to his longevity said, "When it rains, I let it."
And a very good friend of mine said she had recently begun to just accept "what is  is"!
 
Give yourself power in this coming year by refusing to let the unexpected derail you or suck energy.
I have adopted the attitude that these are SURPRISES instead of looking at them as problems or challenges. For me, a surprise usually holds something good, whereas a problem or even a challenge makes me think of struggle.
 
In our business, our job is to jump the hurdles that appear for our buyers and sellers, giving them a smooth ride. After all, if it were easy and without complications, why would the public need us? So, I hope in 2003, you enjoy the ride and welcome the surprises ! It's all in your perspective........
 

Advantage Thinking: The Joy Of BEING a REALTOR

What if, in 2003, you just focused each and every day on taking every opportunity to BE the best that you could be? Now, I don't exactly mean that you should throw away your business plan (or worse, not make one). But I do mean letting go of thinking you must micromanage of each prospecting task into monthly, weekly and daily actions.

 

Imagine that you could set your goal for the year...have a very clear vision of what the end result you want looks like...defined by production goals and personal goals, limiting the time worked to the ideal. And then, each day, you review that picture and think what is the one action that I could take today that would give me the highest payoff to move me towards that goal. Then do that FIRST! Or, at least come back to it as you get the other "must dos" accomplished.

 

If, every day in 2003, you took the action that would give you the highest payoff...I promise you a great year.

 

Now, I want to take this one step further... Are you willing to stretch the limits of your thinking a bit with me here? What if, that activity simply needed to be you BEING the best you by being obvious and making sure you are spending time around people who know and love you. By taking EVERY opportunity to play and network with friends and other business people who have commitments to BIG things?

This is part of stirring up the cosmic dust, which attracts business in unbelievable ways. Often ways that don't seem connected to the actions you have taken, but are a result of the energy you have sent out to others in the universe. Your putting yourself in the midst of where the possibilities for business are by being around lots of people is taking that first step of action, letting the universe know you are serious. And the universe will respond....

 

So, in 2003, BE the best that you can be each and every day and reap the rewards!

 

Advantage Thinking: What differentiates you?

It's a "me,too" business we are in. For each marketing tool you have, your competitors probably will tell the seller "me, too." The best thing you can do is to stay ahead of everyone else by being creative in what you offer to sellers. A weekly hour of R&D to keep up with what your competitors are doing and to see what new ideas and ways of serving your clients are available will let you strategically plan. Break it up into 15 minutes 4 times a week, or any way you like...but do it this year.

 

You want to be zigging when they a zagging. I believe in creating niches and then building into your marketing specific incentives that will speak to your target market in a way that others haven't thought of. Ask yourself, what else is my target market interested in and find some alliance partners. The seniors market could be interested in travel, health, investments. Add some partners to your marketing program this year and watch business grow! By helping others grow their businesses, you'll grow yours!
