BORROWED WISDOM

When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy. - Rumi

"The life that conquers is the life that moves with a steady resolution and persistence toward a predetermined goal. Those who succeed are those who have thoroughly learned the immense importance of planning in life, and the tragic brevity of time." -W.J. Davison

"I will persist until I succeed. Always will I take another step.  If that is of no avail I will take another, and yet another. In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult... I know that small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking."   - Og Mandino, Author

Do every day one or two things for no other reason than that you would rather not do them. Thus, when the hour of darkness comes,  it will not find you unprepared.                William James

There are fine things which you mean to do some day, under what you think will be more favorable circumstances. But the only time that is surely yours is the present, hence this is the time to speak the word of appreciation and sympathy, to do the generous deed, to forgive the fault of a thoughtless friend, to sacrifice self a little more for others. Today is the day in which to express your noblest qualities of mind and heart, to do at least one worthy thing which you have long postponed, and to use your God given abilities for the enrichment of someone less fortunate. Today you can make your life significant and worthwhile. The present is yours to do with as you will.              -- Grenville Kleiser

"You do what you can for as long as you can , and when you finally can’t, you do the next best thing. You back up but you don’t give up." - Chuck Yeager

Joeann's Musings:My Summer Vacation

We've just returned from 8 glorious days in Alaska. When we left Tucson it was 112 degrees, so the cooler weather was definitely a treat.

But the best treat was attending this year's Alaska Adventure. CRS Instructor Jerry Royse lives in Anchorage and has hosted this Conference for the past 11 years. Talk about a CLASS ACT! From the great speakers to the opportunities to connect and network with close to 200 experts and top agents from around the country, from the outrageously  wonderful food and fun entertainment to the perfect locale, these 3 days were definitely worth the time, and money. Next year's Alaska Adventure will be July 8-10 and there are big discounts for registering early (email me if you are interested). Put it on your calendar now. You'll be glad you did!

We saw the blue ice of glaciers, the grey river water from glacier silt, the green magnificence of the mountains and trees. I spotted a moose in the woods on the train trip to Denali National Park, where 20,000 ft Mt McKinley looms majestic. It never got dark-kinda twilighty from 2-4 AM but the sun was still up at 11 PM. Made for a good long day to show property! Good thing the hotel had black-out curtains, though. I don't think I'd do well in the winter when there's only 2.5 hours of daylight.

We had booked the train from Anchorage to Denali-an 8 hour trip and planned to spend the night at the Princess Lodge. About an hour before we got there, I was reading over my stuff and saw there were 2 Princess Lodges-One in Denali and one outside of Talkeetna. We were booked in the one at Talkeetna-where the train had stopped 4 hours previous. Whoops......Husband Bub was not amused. I was a bit chagrined myself since my granddaughter Lily was along and, though I knew I could sleep about anywhere, I wasn't so sure the baby could. Oh my, what to do????? This was one of those times when worry and awfulizing could have detracted from the last hour of the trip, but I asked myself, in my best coaching fashion, was there anything I could do about it? And then I answered myself (yes, this may be the first sign of early dementia!) "Nope....nothing at all in the next hour...so relax and enjoy the ride!"

I got to ruminate about "enjoying the ride" and thinking of all those times in my life when the universe isn't serving up the meal I had planned. For the first 40 or so years, I would be beside myself when the goals that I had were sidetracked..but I started to notice that usually it all works out and most of the time for the better. How often the tendency to awfulize will try to sneak inand waste precious energy over things I have no power over. For years, I'd waste that energy: I'd whine and bellyache over the unfairness of it all, but these days, I've learned to accept the things I can't change and JUST GET ON WITH IT!!!!!!!

When we got to the train station, I called the Talkeetna Princess Lodge and discovered they had a shuttle in an hour from the Denali Princess (these were all connected with the Princess Cruise Company). They said they'd call the Denali Lodge and let them know of our plight and have someone help us. And that they did....we got help from bus drivers, front desk people, tour people and EVERYONE went out of their way to help and make it easy. What a wonderful customer service experience.

Thank you Princess Cruises!!!! You probably saved me what could have been a rocky day in my marriage... Bub HATES surprises and had entrusted me to make all travel arrangements <G>

Just another day in Paradise.....with an opportunity to not only smell the roses (WOW! Alaska had flowers EVERYWHERE) but to meet really nice people and enjoy the sites that Alaska had to offer. Isn't life an amazing adventure?

Advantage Thinking: Persistence- A Good Thing?
We've all heard that those who persist turn out to be the winners...Sort of the Hare and the Tortoise Story, but is persistence really a good trait or can it deter your success by giving you the comfort of the known, while those who are charting new paths are taking some of your marketshare?

I wrote a contrarian article last month about whether it is truly smart to keep doing what you are doing when the results aren't manifesting. Many times, if life gives you a roadblock, it will be wise to find another road! If you'd like to read it: Persistence: A Virtue or a Hindrance

This morning, Bub and I played singles tennis as we do most weekends. It is part of my exercise routine and right now I have a goal to lose 13 pounds. I've heard,"If you want to lose weight, you either have to eat less or exercise more." I don't know about you, but I did not think this was good news. Please give me the MAGIC PILL!!!!! I already exercise 3-4 times a week and my doctor tells me my body has gotten used to that. GREAT. I already eat pretty healthily and less would seem like living in deprivation, so I've had this dilemma of how to lose the 13 pounds. I do know that "the little things make the difference" in life as well as in business.

It occurred to me a couple of weeks ago, that as long as we are at the tennis courts, which have a track right there, I could run around the track after the tennis game. I've never been a runner and until the Triathlon last year, had never even run a mile...of course, that changed <G>, but I couldn't say I enjoyed it. My coach had told me running was the best way to take off weight. So, I looked at the track and told Bub I was going to run some after every game. I did this every time before we went to Alaska, motivated by wanting to look good when I spoke there. But, this morning we were back and we had gotten a late start and it was 100 degrees by the time we finished playing. I knew I could sleaze out of my promise to myself (While I will ALWAYS keep a promise to ANOTHER, how easy it is to not keep a promise to myself).

But I had just read Debbie Ford's great book, THE RIGHT QUESTIONS. The first question is: "Will this choice propel me towards an inspiring future or keep me stuck in the past?"  Whoa.......not much to think about, is there?

So, I entered the track and ran this morning. What I *felt like* doing or not doing certainly didn't have as much significance as looking at it from "did I really want to get to my goal?" My feelings, I've noticed, are sometimes like whining children that will shut up as soon as they are redirected.

Is there a place in your life or your business where a bit of persistence in overcoming your own feelings of "not wanting to do something" would make you feel better about yourself? If so, just do it. Keep your word to yourself. Ask Debbie Ford's question to determine what the *right* choice is. You will be rewarded in more ways than one and can put that kind of persistence to work for you.

One of my clients, who recently participated in The Real Estate Game, said that after the 4 weeks of calls every morning, on the fifth week, she felt a void and realized she has instilled a habit. Doing something repeatedly for 21+ days will do that for you. So pick 4 or 5 activities that you know will make a difference in the 2nd half of 2003 and for 3 weeks focus on putting one of them into practice until it is a habit. Then the next 21 days, take the 2nd one and instill it. At the end of 15 weeks, you'll have 5 new habits that serve you!!!! Can you imagine what miracles might start showing up?

Persist where it is taking you to an inspiring future. Quit persisting where it keeps you stuck in the past.
