The Real Estate Game

A 15 minute group coaching call every M-F for 4 weeks.

Here's what a recent participant had to say:
"Coach, you just helped me create my best real estate sales month of all-time!  As I was playing "The Real Estate Game" through the spring market, March 2002 was the month I recorded my first "triple double"!  That is, I took 14 listings, had 12 Listings Sold, and 13 Buyer Sales!! In just one month, I put together 25 transactions!  The previous year, I put together 109.  The first 15 minutes of the day is more important than you think!  Thanks again! "

Australia...in 4 weeks (or less)

So, I took the advice of my good friend, Leonardo Da Vinci who recommended:"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. So some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen."
My hubby, Bub, and I had a fantastic, whirlwind of a trip to the land of OZ! Where they say "No Worry" to most everything! I was enchanted to see kangaroos, camels, emus, eagles and lorikeets moseying around in the outback and not so outback!
We started in Sydney and then took the train all the way across the country to Perth, flew to Alice Springs and drove to Ayres Rock and then flew to Brisbane and visited the Gold and Sunshine Coasts before taking another train to Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef and Mossman at the edge of the oldest rainforest on this planet!
Photos and commentary will be posted for those interested at www.joeann.com/oz02.htm . I spoke at an International Coaches Federation Australasian Conference and at a ICF chapter  conference on the beautiful Sunshine Coast and honed my coaching skills while meeting many wonderful and fascinating people. It was a wonderful opportunity to get a renewed perspective and reassess many things.

Real estate, I learned, is done quite differently, with no MLS or lockboxes, a much lower average commission and many homes sold by auction. It appeared to me that they work a lot harder for their sales....We will be kicking off some Aussie Real Estate Games in the next few months and I am excited to have some good friends there who can educate me as this global economy makes it important for each of us to know what is happening beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones. It got me thinking outside the box!

From a technology standpoint, the world has certainly become a smaller place! I took my TREO 180 and my Dell laptop. Before leaving, I confirmed I could make and receive calls in Australia. When we landed in Sydney, my phone found the network immediately and it was rare during the entire 4 weeks that I wasn't in range. This meant someone could call my local Tucson number and it rang right there in Australia. There was no programming or special numbers or anything. It was also easy to dial home and check for messages each day (although I did have to pay 99 cents a minute). I use Earthlink for my ISP and had downloaded the local numbers for the cities we were visiting. I did have to reprogram the number for Outlook to dial in each city, but had no problems connecting, even in the outback. While I had told everyone I wasn't working on this vacation, it did allow me to stay connected when I felt like it. I can see how it would be easy if you wanted to (though I can't imagine why) stay connected and do business "as usual" to do so-though you might have people calling you at 3 AM :>)

Vacations CAUSE Productivity!

Vacations make you prioritize & focus
Since we planned to be gone for 4 weeks, it was important for me to cover all the bases. The great news is that I must not be all that important, because things hummed right along without me. I left a message on my phone machine that I would be out the entire month of July and received few phone messages.

Now, the good news is that most people take more time to plan their vacations than their businesses! Well, maybe it isn't good news if the business is important...
But the inclusion of personal and family and enjoyment time are integral to you being able to work at peak productivity. You know the old saying that the most productive day of the year is the day before vacation. It is so because you bring a focus and prioritization to that day that allows you to accomplish about triple what you normally do.
COACHES TIP>Why not pretend for 1 day a week this month that you'll be gone the rest of the week and work to get everything done so that it can happen. You might even want to schedule some time off to make it real!

Quieting The Static

Vacations are one way to re-connect with yourself
If your average day is anything like mine, you probably have lots of people and situations wanting your attention and time. Sometimes, it feels like I am the ball in the pinball machine, being thrown from one side of the box to the other and then whoosh...something comes along and sends me in an entirely different direction.
That perspective that Da Vinci speaks of is hard to have when you are in the middle of reacting to the urgent (or what someone else feels is urgent for you to attend to!)
Our time away reminded me how important it is to have those moments of calm within EVERY day to keep myself sane and be able to hear myself and attend to my needs while attending to the chaos.
COACHES TIP>Besides a vacation, a conscious blocking of time to do planning and re-assessment for personal and business can put new life into the ho-hum day to day. Consider something like the Living On Purpose Business Planning Retreat or put on your calendar RIGHT NOW when you are going to plan 2003!

The NEW Business Skill

Harvard Business Review says meditation and intuition are the two most important skills for leaders in the 21st Century!

I must confess....I am guilty of having an ongoing and nagging conversation within my head between the one who says "Meditation is what you need to be doing regularly." and the one who says, "I don't have time." I wish I could tell you I am self-disciplined and practice meditation daily, but I struggle to get myself to sit still.
During our vacation, however, I did meditate daily and I am bringing that back to my "real" life this month.
I KNOW I make better decisions and work much more effectively with less suffering when I take 15 minutes to stop the external chatter.
COACHES TIP> I've found a great book, if you are interested in this
The Three Minute Meditator
by David Harp and Nina Feldman

It's a quick and easy read with simple ways to use mediation to further your effectiveness.
Try it for a month and let me know the results.

Borrowed Wisdom

"Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in

the air. You name them - work, family, health, friends and

spirit, and you're keeping all of these in the air. You will soon

understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce

back. But the other four balls - family, health, friends and spirit

are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably

scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged, or even shattered. They will never

be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your

life."

 - Brian Dyson - CEO Coca Cola Enterprises
