Why
do I want to be extraordinary vs. ordinary?
Why am I pushing my limits?
It occurred to me, this is the difference between
happiness and joy. Choosing to stop running would give me
happiness and involve a short term payoff that would only
satisfy briefly. This triathlon has given me insight into how
seductive the short term comfort can be. Choosing
to keep running, however, gives me a longer lasting joy in
knowing I COULD do it. For you, is there a place you are
choosing short term comfort over long term joy?
Are YOU ready to do something extraordinary and push YOUR
limits?

In 2002, my
newsletter will be delivered to you twice a month, alternating
with a technology issue and a coaching issue. In the
technology issue, you’ll get information and resources to
help you work more effectively with today’s technology. The
coaching issue will be the “soft” side of being
effective-tips for you to enhance your ability to focus on
your strengths and to think creatively. I believe you are most
effective when you focus on BOTH what you do AND who you are
being! Thanks for all the great input and feedback in 2001. I
hope that 2002 is off to a great start for you and it turns
out to be your best year ever.
If you feel a
coach might help you attain your dreams this year, I do have
room for 3 more clients!
PUSHING
YOUR LIMITS
Training for
the triathlon I will be participating in next weekend has been
an interesting and challenging undertaking. While I committed
myself to regular exercise several years ago, and have been
doing strength training a couple of days a week, weekly tennis
playing and bike riding, it’s been pretty comfortable.
My training schedule for the triathlon, however, has been
anything but comfortable! It has involved doubling
(and sometimes tripling) the length of my workout sessions,
adding running (which I have NEVER done) and pushing way beyond
the limits of what I thought I could do at 53. After 3
weeks, every part of my body ached when I moved from a sitting
position to an ambulatory one. After 6 weeks, I had developed a
shin splint on one leg and on the other, plantar
fasciitis, which
got so bad I was on crutches to walk for a brief period.
One of my dear friends even suggested we should start taking
pledges (from those who loved me) if I DIDN’T do it! But I was
committed to push my limits!
As
I ran at 7000 ft altitude in Santa Fe last week, I wondered why
I was pushing myself and why I didn’t stop when it got
uncomfortable. Here I was….. running, panting, feeling real
struggle to keep going and there was a very rational voice in my
head that said it was a good idea to stop and walk.
However, the irrational voice in my head said, “Keep
going…you can do it….don’t stop…” Why do I
listen to the irrational vs the rational? Why do I want to
be extraordinary vs. ordinary? Why am I pushing my limits?
It occurred to me, this is the difference between
happiness and joy.
Choosing
to stop would give me happiness and involve a short term payoff
that would only satisfy briefly. Choosing to keep running,
however, gives me a longer lasting joy in knowing I COULD do it.
My daughter is currently struggling with overcoming her drug
addiction and is making a choice every day for the joy vs the
short term happiness by choosing to stay clean. It’s been very
hard for her. This triathlon has given me insight into how
seductive the short term comfort can be. For you, is there
a place you are choosing short term comfort over long term joy?
Are you ready to Do
something extraordinary and push YOUR limits?

The SIMPLE LIVING Advantage:
Being Present

"Each
second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a
moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our
children? We teach them that two and two make four, and
that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach
them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you
know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the
years that have passed, there has never been another child like
you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you
move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven.
You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And
when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a
marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world
worthy of its children."
Pablo Casals (1876-1973)
This Month's Book Pick:
Fish, by Stephen
Lundin, Harry Paul & John Christensen
I LOVE THIS BOOK! The cover
says; “Catch the Energy & Release the Potential.”
Reading this little book gave me lots of inspiration and ideas about how to
bring fun into the work environment. BEING PRESENT is one of the important
qualities of doing a GREAT job! And it made me think….Am I “making the
day” of each client I work with? Are you? I bet this will give you a new
perspective and generate some great ideas.
Action Exercises
For Being Present
~~~~~For a whole day, pretend you just
got dropped into your body and you are from Mars and don’t “know” any of
the people around you. Listen to them with this fresh perspective.
~~~~~ Ask twice as many questions as
you normally would. When you think you really understand, reflect back what you
heard to see if that was what they meant.
~~~~~Notice something you’ve been
taking for granted (a sunset, sunrise, the birds singing outside your home, your
child’s laughter) and appreciate the specialness of the moment.
THE
COACHING DISTINCTION OF THE MONTH:
<<>> **
<<>> ** <<>> **<<>> ** <<>>
Being
Present vs. Showing up
DEFINITIONS:
BEING PRESENT: Focusing 100%
on the person or situation
SHOWING UP: Physically
being with someone or doing something
EXAMPLE: When
Janice listened to potential sellers, she asked lots of questions to make sure she
really understood their motivation and needs. She was even willing to tell them
she wouldn’t be the best person to represent them, if she felt this was the
case. Bob went to a listing appointment determined to make a great presentation
and persuade the sellers to list with him.
KEY POINT: When
you are 100% present with someone, they are able to feel trusting more quickly
because they have the experience of really being heard. When you are thinking
about something else or how you look, others can sense you aren’t “all
there”.
BENEFIT: You
increase your understanding of each person’s needs and are far
better at meeting those needs. You quit assuming you know where
someone else is coming from and check in with them to make sure.
People feel safer and more comfortable when you are present with
them.
COACHING
ACTIONS: Are you really present? Or just there?
- In
a situation where you think you know what response you will get (maybe with
a teenager or with your spouse), try being really present and really listen
to their response. Ask questions and reflect it back until you are sure you
REALLY know where they are coming from.
- Ask
others around you to rate you from 1-100 on a being present scale.
- Try
talking half as much and asking twice as many questions on your next
appointment.
The HEALTH Advantage
Tips
From Darla
Health
authorities recommend you consume 30% or less of your total daily calories from
fat, with 10% or less of those calories from saturated fat. Dietary fat is found
in both animal and plant sources. The three basic classifications are: (1)
monounsaturated, (2)polyunsaturated and (3) saturated fats. Unsaturated fats are
healthier choices, such as nuts, seeds, vegetable oils and soft margarine
products.
TIPS
TO REDUCE FAT:
- Use
evaporated skim milk instead of cream in sauces and desserts
- Create
your own nonfat salad dressing by mixing balsamic vinegar, mustard and
herbs.
- Drain
nonfat yogurt through a sieve or cheesecloth overnight in the refrigerator
and use in recipes that call for cream
- Saute
foods in chicken broth, vegetable stock, tomato juice or wine instead of
frying them in butter or oil.
- Keep
olive oil in a spray bottle to lightly coat sauté pans.
- Make
your own taco shells! Hang soft corn tortillas directly over the oven rack
at 400 degrees until they are crisp (instead of frying)
- Whip
up French fries by placing potato slices on a nonstick baking pan, and coat
with a light spray of oil. Sprinkle with paprika or salt and bake at 350
degrees for 35 or 40 minutes. Turn once during baking. For a different
flavor, try sweet potatoes
- Substitute
six egg whites plus one whole egg for every 3 eggs in your favorite recipes.
THINKING: Time For Biz Planning
<<>>
** <<>> ** <<>> **<<>> ** <<>>
Have you started planning 2002?
As you plan 2002, remember the RULES have
changed in real estate and in many ways, it is a whole NEW game. Make sure your strategies
include not only what is working for you now, but also the implementation of new
strategies to capture the business of the Internet Empowered Consumer and the needs of
todays clients.
Your website strategy, sphere of influence
strategy, a menu of services strategy and a For Sale by Owner strategy are all some
possibilities. It may be time to drop some
old strategies that worked in the past but are producing less results or taking more
energy to create the same results. Your strategies will be most effective if you target
specific niches. Choosing three or four areas where you can be (or are!) the expert is a
more powerful way to build business than trying to be all things to all people. How can
you go deeper this year in those areas and build your reputation as the real estate guru?
NOW is the time to prepare for a great next
year. By doing this now, you will be ready to hit the ground running in January. Block a
full day to gather the numbers from this year, to design your vision and strategies for
2002, and then put together your budget and marketing plan.
The clarity you have on whom you love to
work with and whom you serve best will lead naturally to actions and ideas. Have fun with
your planning, create a plan that also includes vacations and family time, and time for
you to do some things you love. And here are a couple of thoughts to keep in mind:
One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat
in a tree. Which road do I take? she asked. Where do you want to
go? was his response. I dont know, Alice answered.
Then, said the cat, it doesnt matter. - Lewis Carroll
Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint
on it you can.
Danny Kaye
Knowing where you want to go and then
throwing a BUNCH of paint
on the canvas will produce an AWESOME 2002!
The INSPIRATION Advantage
============================================
” No matter where you
are, make sure you are there.” Mahatma
Gandhi
“It
is a good and safe rule to sojourn in every place as if you meant to spend you’re life there, never
omitting an opportunity of doing a kindness, or speaking a true
word, or making a friend.”
Ruskin
“To
do two things at once is to do neither.”
