THE COACHING DISTINCTION OF THE MONTH:

    Opportunity Vs. Distraction

    DEFINITIONS:

Opportunity: A good fit for your goals/passions

Distraction:    Something that MIGHT be an opportunity in the future

   COMPARISONS:

  • Scarcity vs Abundance

  • Choosing vs Avoiding Consequences

  • Proactive vs Reactive

EXAMPLE: Jane saw an opportunity to save money when the homes magazine that she got the best results from called her with a cheap, space available rate on an additional page. Robert was distracted by a 50% off sale onsome direct mail cards that were not part of his marketing plan

KEY POINT: When you evaluate whether something is an opportunity or a distraction, you must know how it fits with what you are committedto. A distraction for one person may well be an opportunity for another.

BENEFIT: You become willing to distinguish the distractions and let go of them,. As you do, more opportunities that fit your needs can show up.

COACHING ACTIONS: Your time is your most valuable commodity. Where are you being distracted? As new customers appear, ask yourself  if they represent an opportunity or a distraction. Let go of or refer all that don’t fit your ideal client profile. Consider with each new marketing decision, if it fits your plan for the year.

    ADVANTAGE THINKING: Spring Cleaning

“ If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant:if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome”  Charlotte Bronte

Spring represents new beginnings. As the earth calls forth the flowers and warms our days, a beauty and lightness greets me and makes mewant to dance and sing! A joyful and hopeful energy surrounds meand reminds me of Robin Williams observation,“Spring is nature’s way of saying, LET”S PARTY!”

What new beginnings are you looking forward to in this first Spring of the new millennium? Are you experiencing your best year ever, so far? Why not take time right now to do some  evaluation.

The Two Most Important Things To Do For Spring:

  1. A Quarterly Course Correction:

You made a plan for 2000 (Please tell me you did!). Are you on target? When was the last time you check in? It is time to review your plan and decide if you are taking the actions that will take you to the target you set, or if it is time to do some course corrections. For more on this, I’ve written an article at   http://www.realtimes.com/rtnews/rtapages/20000324_course.htm

  1. Clear The Clutter

What are you tolerating? Putting up with? What is draining your energy? Spring is the perfect time to throw out the old and ready yourself forthe new

Here are some places to start:

  • Throw out 25 things that are broken, useless or you don’t need

  • Give away 25 things that are in good shape, but not you

  • Pick one area of your home or office and make it 100% clutterfree (Your desk?)

  • Stop doing anything that drains energy

  • Make a list of EVERYTHING you are tolerating and take care of at least one item each day, until you become toleration-free!

I offer a 100 point checklist from Coachu, called the Clean Sweep if you are ready to play this game and go for a life of energy, without distractions!

Spend 3 or 4 hours to do these two things and you will reap a bountiful harvest in the coming months. Remember, you reap what you sow. Once you see if you are on course and have removed some of the distractions, Spring is the time to be planting lots of seeds…..Don’t wonder if they are growing beneath the surface, just keep taking actions and the harvest will come. Thought you might enjoy this short parable:

Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile spring soil. The first seed said, "I want to grow! I want to send my roots deep into the soil beneath me, and thrust my sprouts through the earth's crust above me . . . I want to unfurl my tender buds like banners to announce the arrival of spring . . . I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the blessing of the morning dew on my petals!"  And so she grew. The second seed said, "I am afraid. If I send my roots into the ground below, I don't know what I will encounter in the dark. If I push my way through the hard soil above me I may damage my delicate sprouts . . . what if I let my buds open and a snail tries to eat them? And if I were to open my blossoms, a small child may pull me from the ground. No, it is much better for me to wait until it is safe."  And so she waited.  A yard hen scratching around in the early spring ground for food found the waiting seed and promptly ate it.

Moral Of The Story
Those of us who refuse to risk and grow get swallowed up by life.
